Hashidate — Japanese Tier I cruiser.

A light patrol gunboat designed for coastal operations. This gunboat was well-armed for her dimensions, including AA artillery. She was not armored and had low speed.

To defend its coasts, the Imperial Japanese Navy operated relatively small warships with large caliber guns called “gunboats.” These were very handy ships as Japan had an extremely long coastline with numerous small islands. Most of gunboats were older obsolete warships converted from their previous roles.

In the 1920s, when Japan starts getting involved in full-scale campaigns in China, and operations in China’s large winding rivers lead to a demand for more gunboats. This in turn lead to the construction of the new Hashidate-class gunboats.
Gunboats are usually used for lengthy patrols on rivers and coasts, so more emphasis was placed on occupant comfort and scouting abilities than pure firepower. As the Sino-Japanese War was already progressing, the Hashidate-class was unique in the fact that it was expected to be involved in battles. These ships were also expected to escort convoys around home waters. To accomplish this, they had high seaworthiness and displacement close to that of destroyers.

In World of Warships, this allows Hashidate to fight gun duels, even though she is only a gunship. Historically, she was fitted with three 120 mm 45 caliber dual purpose guns, mounted on one dual and one single gun turret. In the game, they have been upgraded to two dual gun turrets, bringing the total up to 4 guns.
Originally, 4 Hashidate-class ships were planned, but by the time lead ship, Hashidate, was commissioned, the war situation has degraded, and sea lane defenses became more important. Only two ships of the class were built, and the rest were cancelled.

The lead ship of the class, Hashidate, was sunk when torpedoed by a submarine near Hong Kong. Her sister ship, Uji, survived the war, and served a strange fate as she was handed over to the Republic of China Navy as war reparations where she was renamed the Chang Zhi and later was captured by the People’s Liberation Army Navy where she served as the Nanchang until 1979.
