Nutan's Son Mohnish Bhal : A Bollywood Journey from From Flop Hero to Iconic Villain
Mohnish Behl, the talented Indian actor known for his versatile roles in Bollywood, has had a remarkable journey in the film industry. Born on August 14, 1961, in Mumbai, Mohnish Behl is the son of the legendary actress Nutan and Lieutenant Commander Rajneesh Behl of the Indian Navy. Acting is deeply ingrained in his family's roots, with his maternal grandmother Shobhana Samarth and aunt Tanuja also being prominent figures in the Indian film industry.
From an early age, Mohnish aspired to become an Air Force pilot, a dream his mother Nutan wholeheartedly supported. However, his father was reluctant to grant him permission. Despite this setback, Mohnish developed an interest in acting and began receiving offers for films. Recognizing her limitations in teaching acting, Nutan advised her son to approach his craft with sincerity and take gradual steps towards success.
In 1981, Mohnish made his debut in the film industry with the movie 'Itihaas,' a project that took six years to release. During this time, he worked in several other films, including 'Bekarar' (1983), 'Teri Bahon Mein,' and 'Meri Adalat.' In 1987, 'Itihaas' finally hit the theaters, but despite his efforts, Mohnish faced disappointment as most of his films failed to make an impact at the box office. The only exception was the horror film 'Purana Mandir,' produced by the Ramsay Brothers, which garnered some success. However, his sister did not benefit from this film, as horror movies were often considered B-grade films at the time.
The string of five consecutive flops took a toll on Mohnish's career, leaving him without work for the next two years. In the midst of this uncertainty, Mohnish decided to pursue his other passion-bodybuilding-and embarked on a journey to become a pilot. He joined the Mumbai Flying Club for pilot training and frequented the gym at Sea Rock Hotel, where he met fellow fitness enthusiast Salman Khan. The two bonded over their shared love for bodybuilding, and during a conversation, Salman revealed his desire to become an actor. Mohnish, who was disheartened by his own struggles, jokingly questioned Salman's prospects given his tall stature and impressive physique. Little did they know that fate had a different plan in store for both of them.
Salman Khan eventually landed the lead role in Sooraj Barjatya's film 'Maine Pyar Kiya' and extended an invitation to Mohnish to audition for a villainous role. Putting aside his ego, Mohnish accepted the offer and successfully auditioned for the film. However, this presented a dilemma for Tarachand Barjatya, the film's producer, who was initially skeptical about casting Nutan's son as a villain after having seen him portray heroes in previous films. Nutan, upon hearing the news, promptly contacted Tarachand and requested that her son be given the opportunity to play the antagonist. Touched by her heartfelt plea, Tarachand agreed and promised Nutan that he would cast Mohnish in positive roles in his future productions.
Released on December 29, 1989, 'Maine Pyar Kiya' proved to be a monumental success, catapulting Mohnish into the limelight and establishing his image as a prominent villain. This breakthrough role opened doors for him, and filmmakers began clamoring to cast him as the antagonist in their movies. Mohnish delivered compelling performances in hit films such as 'Baaghi,' 'Bol Radha Bol,' 'Heena,' 'Deewana,' and 'Shola Aur Shabnam'.
