A Historic Journey of Rivalry and Growth
This route connects two cities with a shared history of ambition and rivalry during the settling of the American West:

Boulder: Founded in 1858, Boulder began as a strategic supply town during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. It quickly pivoted from a rugged mining camp to an intellectual center after the University of Colorado was established here in 1876, defining its unique character and commitment to preservation.

Denver: Also founded in 1858, Denver City quickly became the dominant regional hub due to its superior access to the railroad and major stagecoach routes. A bitter rivalry ensued, which Denver eventually won by securing its status as the Colorado Territory Capital in 1867.

The Highway Connection: The main highway connecting the two, US-36 (originally part of the Denver-Boulder Turnpike, built in 1952), replaced older, slower county roads and facilitated the rapid suburban growth and easy commute between these two important Colorado cities.
