Traditional spacing recommendations and growing practices result in tomatoes that take up a ton of room in the garden. It also results in very large plants with excessive foliage, and they require much more weeding.

If you're growing heirloom varieties that may not offer many tomatoes, intensive growing could be of significant benefit to you. The same goes for cherry and salad tomatoes, which tend to be very prolific in tight or small spaces (cherry tomatoes are great candidates for container gardens, for example.)

If you're growing production hybrids, such as paste or canning varieties, you need to offer wider spacing while using this method to ensure that the tomato plants can reach their full potential. Those plants are bred to put on heavy harvests, and they'll require more light, nutrients, shoulder space, and water.

For determinate tomatoes, do not use this method. Those can be pruned to an extent, but you cannot apply this extreme pruning technique to those plants. If you do, you'll lose a significant amount of your harvest.
