In this HTML accessibility tutorial, Ian Lloyd takes you through website accessibility examples which while implemented by website developers with the aim of improving website accessibility, unintentionally ended up making the accessibility of the website worse and falling foul of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (wcag).

HTML Accessibility Tutorial Abstract:

In this talk, Lloydi will look at a variety of things that website developers and web designers do on their websites with the great intention of improving HTML accessibility for their visitors, but unintentionally cause problems. Website Accessibility Examples that include markup and coding practices that appear would be helpful can ultimately frustrate and, ironically, end up racking up more Web Content Accessibility Guideline (wcag) failures. The presentation includes demonstrations using assistive technology (screen readers, voice control) that show how ‘help’ becomes a hindrance.

Ian Lloyd

Ian Lloyd (or 'Lloydi' as he prefers) is a Principal Accessibility Engineer at accessibility specialists TPGi. Although he has only worked exclusively in the accessibility field for 5 years, he has been 'banging on about it' since the early 2000s as a front-end web developer.
