This is a compilation of security-camera clips (hence the low video quality and lack of sound) showing a Cooper's Hawk killing an Eastern Cottontail Rabbit. If you don't like seeing animals killing each other, please don't watch the video. As the late Steve Irwin (a.k.a. "The Crocodile Hunter") always said, "It's nature's way".

I don't think I had ever before seen a Cooper's Hawk in my front yard, either in person or with the security cameras. Certainly never so close to the house. What a show! We'd been out all day, and when we got back I saw the rabbit dead on the path, with very little damage. I figured either a Coyote had killed it and got scared off without taking it away or a cat had killed it just for fun, as they do. I was surprised to see a small hawk taking down such a large prey. I'm not sure what this hawk was thinking -- I believe "its eyes are bigger than its belly" is the expression. I could easily be mistaken, but it looked to me like the hawk was at times trying to lift the rabbit, and finding it just too heavy.

Time from the initial chase to the hawk giving up on lifting the rabbit was about 20 minutes. I got home and cleaned it up nearly seven hours later, so I don't think the hawk was coming back for more.
