Benedict Cumberbatch reads Alan Turning’s letter to Mrs Morcom (18 February 1930)

Alan Turing was a human being of exceptional intelligence — a mathematical genius — and worked as one of the leading code-breakers during World War II. He is also considered to be the "father of modern computing" thanks to his pioneering work in the field of computer science. In 1950, before the term "Artificial Intelligence" had been coined, he posed the question, "Can computers think?" and proposed the Turing Test. His achievements are staggering.

Writing on 18 February 1930, 17-year-old Alan Turing sends his condolences to Mrs Morcom, the mother of his first love, Christopher, who had died six days previously from bovine tuberculosis.

Morcom was a contemporary of Turing's at Sherborne School. He shared his passion for mathematics and introduced him to astronomy. Morcom had contracted the disease years earlier from drinking tainted milk.

Though Turing's crush was not reciprocated, he was profoundly affected by the death of his friend.
