The celebration of graduation, known as "studenten," varies across Sweden. The events may begin with the donning of the graduation cap a few weeks before the final exams, a decision made by the head of the school. The graduation cap has been used in Sweden since the mid-1800s and features emblems and sometimes tassels, embroidery, and other decorations. Sweden has its own design, which differs slightly from those in other countries, and there are even variations within Sweden. The cap is also worn on the graduation day itself.

Students usually organise a prom at the end of the school year, often held at a venue other than the school. At a student prom, it is common to dress up and attend in pairs. The dress code can vary. Attending the prom is usually optional for students, and due to planning and possible limitations, pre-registration is often required.

On the actual graduation day, there is often a champagne breakfast, either at a student's home or outdoors in a park. At school, the graduation day might include a music concert, a student lunch, the awarding of scholarships, and other honours. A graduation ceremony in a church may also take place. On the graduation day, students sing traditional graduation songs. Since the late 1900s, it has been common for students to sing "Vi har tagit studenten, för vi har tagit studenten. Vi har tagit studenten, fy fan vad vi är bra!" to the tune of the English-language song For He's a Jolly Good Fellow, which is itself based on the French folk song Malbrough s'en va-t-en guerre. Another example is the Studentsången, with music composed by Prince Gustaf.
