Dairy farming is the single largest sub sector of agriculture in Kenya. It contributes 14% of Agricultural (GDP) with an annual growth rate of 4.1%.

It is the most rapidly expanding dairy sub sector in sub-Sahara Africa with over 85% of the dairy cattle population in Eastern Africa.

According to IFAD, It is a major activity in the livestock sector and an important source of livelihood to approximately 1 million small scale farmers.
