A historic and unusually intense Lake Effect snowstorm impacted the NW Indiana and Chicagoland region November 8, 9, and 10th, 2025. This series of events began with the passage of a cold front early in the AM of the 7th, which produced some rainfall and lightning, followed by another cold front that same night. Beginning on the afternoon of 11/8, a clipper system associated with a very powerful upper level trough impacted the region, bringing several hours of steady rainfall that later transitioned to snow as colder temps mixed down.

By the morning of 11/9, a significant lake effect snow band had developed over NWI, and began impacting my location in Valparaiso around 10:20 AM. This initial impact resulted in blizzard conditions, observed gusts up to 32 kts, and around 3 inches of snowfall. Steady, albeit lighter snowfall continued into the afternoon as the band shifted east. During the evening, an intense shortwave system enhanced the lake effect band, which pivoted to the west and developed into a mesoscale low. The worst of this began around 10:30 PM and lasted until midnight, with heavy snow continuing past 4 AM. The time frame between 11:30 and midnight produced some of the most extreme conditions I have ever personally witnessed in a winter storm, with complete whiteout conditions and winds gusting 40-45 mph.

Though the worst of the storm cleared by the following morning, the Lake Effect band shifted east again, impacting the area around noon through 1:30 PM. This produced another 3 inches of snow, with extremely intense snowfall rates before clearing out as temps fell into the low 20s.

This event led to isolated tree damage and power outages, especially during the first lake effect band as the snow was heavy/wet along with intense wind gusts. Total snowfall from this event was around 15 inches, though melting and settling only created a peak snowpack of around 12.5 inches
