September Song (Written by Eric)

Eric’s song is about the time when new students are leaving home to join their courses at university. We are very lucky at The Bridge Folk Club – some of those fresh students every year are supertalented entrants to the Folk and Traditional Music degree course at Newcastle University. They are all magnificent and we enjoy their visits to the club so much

September Song

Summer’s end is sudden, there is autumn in the air
And all the teenage Emos have gone from Eldon square
But a girl is playing fiddle outside the Fenwick’s store
And the world’s a little brighter than it seemed to be before

And she’s laying down a rhythm with syncopated bows
While the wind blows in from Kielder, and cuts through all your clothes
And the shops have filled their windows with all their winter gear
Soon they will remind us that Christmas will be here

September is renewal, the year has just begun
With suitcases and laptops and the university run
It’s hard not to be with them in everything they do
With some anticipation and a sense of déjà vu

I remember student lodgings, way up in the eaves
Of an old Victorian mansion, and the smell of falling leaves
When the world was still expanding as the nights were drawing in
With everything to play for, and everything to win

Now the house is feeling empty, their rooms are looking bare
We wish that they were with us, or we wish that we were there
And we know the world’s connected and the distances are small
But we miss their face at table, and their trainers in the hall
