The structure of the heart wall has three layers, with the thick myocardium being surrounded by the inner endocardium and the outer epicardium. The myocardium provides a scaffolding for the heart chambers, assists in contraction and relaxation of the cardiac walls and conducts electrostimulations through its own tissues and into the epicardium.
