The Budget Session 2026 is set to commence with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint session of Parliament at 11 am. This address comes four days before Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the Union Budget for 2026-27. An all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh revealed significant friction, with the Opposition demanding structured debates on MGNREGA restoration, voter roll revisions, and foreign policy. One representative noted, 'The Government, however, made it clear that the Budget Session will primarily focus on the Budget, with other issues to be raised during the motion of thanks'. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that while suggestions were noted, fresh debates on certain settled issues were ruled out. The Biju Janata Dal raised concerns regarding Odisha's farmers and law and order. The session will occur in two phases, the first from 28th January to 13th February, and the second from 9th March to 2nd April, with a confrontational atmosphere expected between the treasury and opposition benches.
