Day 5 of my 22-day print-a-day series ☀️

Last night we turned the clocks ahead, which means we’re coming out of winter and into the brighter days of spring. Every year, like (literal) clockwork, I forget just how badly the cold and dark months impact my mental health. I get restless, impatient, anxious, uncomfortable — and so so so easily frustrated.

I spent the past few months going through this cycle again. Feeling really angry about my own progress and what is missing in my life. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the things around us in nature are quiet, deeply resting, preparing for the future, or straight-up dying off during the winter. I think we do those things too — but it’s more difficult in a productivity-driven world. We slow down, we get quiet, we reflect, we plan ahead, we ask questions. But we feel badly for doing so.

I got really angry about words like “grind” and “hustle” and all that come with them. I got mad at anyone I’d ever let convince me I wasn’t doing enough, including myself.

I think I’ll remember this winter though, and I’ll be more prepared for the next transition into winter. I’ll be ready for the rest, instead of trying to fight it off. At least I hope so.

So here's a print inspired by the impact that daylight has on me. I’m not in love with the design, but I do really love what it represents. And carving today helped me a lot, too. I’ll gladly “lose an hour” in exchange for a new start, and more sunshine.
