This presentation focuses on the Church for Our Common Home and the John Cobb Eco Farm and Retreat Center. My inspiration for the Church emerged in the 2015 Seizing an Alternative Conference, which raised my conscience about the severity of our earth crisis and inspired me to found the Church for Our Common Home (https://www.churchforourcommonhome.com/). I did not grow up with any religion and moved eighteen times in my first eighteen years in five different countries. Perhaps this contributes to my planetary perspective that celebrates the wonder of our interfaith, interspecies, and interconnected web of life. My husband Dr. Walt Rutherford is a transpersonal psychologist, and together we offer counseling, spiritual direction, and dream work. We worship in a barn on Sundays at 4:00pm, both in person and on zoom, giving thanks for the goats, chickens, ducks, cats, and beautiful rabbit Gracie, together with the breeze, trees, and grass. John Cobb joined us on most Sundays in the last few years of his life.

The John Cobb Eco Farm and Retreat Center is a five-acre farm in Oregon where we grow beets and sunflowers with biodynamic, spiritual farming in the Hilda Garden (after Hildegard of Bingen). We also have a prayer station named for Julian of Norwich, and a labyrinth. Our mission is to proclaim that God is love, and that human creatures are called to love God and neighbor with our full selves, including the whole natural world as our neighbor. In addition, we offer an arts ministry and community gathering spaces, such as the Interfaith Secret Prayer Garden, Mary Magdalene Café, and rose garden that hosts our weekly Earth Crisis Support Group and Potluck Party (ECSG). We also link with other organizations, joining an interfaith group in vigils for Gaza, as well as the Moral Mondays’ Poor Peoples Campaign.

BIOGRAPHY

Rev. Bonnie Tarwater is a Christian Unitarian Universalist minister and founder of Church for Our Common Home in Oregon and offering worship and programs globally on Zoom. Rev. Bonnie is an artist, musician, social justice activist, dream worker and writer. She served as a traditional parish minister for many years and hospice chaplain. Currently, she serves on several nonprofit boards and works with her husband doing counseling at the Our Common Home Counseling Center. Together they have four grown children and four grandchildren. She holds a BA in Art from the University of California, San Diego, an MFA in Theater from the American Conservatory Theater, and an MDiv from the Claremont School of Theology.
