Out of Possession Shape

Out of possession the 4-4-2 diamond has a lot of fluidity relating to its structure. It can remain as a 4-4-2 diamond and press with a front 2 or 3. Or, move into a traditional 4-4-2 with its recognisable two banks of 4.

Pressing

The lack of wide players in the 4-4-2 diamond means the formation will force the opposition centrally into the numerical advantage achieved by the diamond midfield. The ball side striker will engage the centre-back, curving their run to prevent the pass into the full-back. This will force the opposition either into their midfield unit and their numerical disadvantage against the four midfielders. Or long which the defensive unit should be prepared to deal with. Both will allow the team to quickly regain possession and begin their attack.

Blocks

With the 4-4-2 diamond the mid and low blocks will generally resemble the traditional 4-4-2 with two banks of four remaining compact to restrict access to the central areas. Forcing the opposition into wide areas or backwards.
