A new research proposes that scientists looking for clues of alien technology should look for city lights on exoplanets.

Technosignatures are technological manifestations that can be discovered via astronomical tools. Until now, the hunt for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) has mostly concentrated on radio waves, although shorter-wavelength optical light is also a possible technosignature.

Sharp-eyed aliens inspecting Earth's nightside, for example, may be able to discern our presence from emissions from city lights here, despite the fact that such emissions are very concentrated. Furthermore, advanced civilizations on exoplanets may have developed cities on a far larger portion of their planets' surfaces.

The report, which was published online last month in the journal Acta Astronautica, includes a variety of findings from a workshop held in Seattle in August 2020 by NASA and the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science.

The paper's main takeaway point is that technosignature searches may be featured in most missions' science justifications at no extra expense.

The study also encourages the larger astronomy community to consider the possibilities of discovering technosignatures. The means to detect technosignatures may already be accessible, but "starting looking will need a community-wide effort," according to the report.

Funding is still a constraint on the advancement of technosignature science. However, the report claims that in recent years, both public and commercial financing groups have demonstrated a growing interest in the quest for technosignatures.

Electromagnetic signals aren't the only kind of technological communication. According to the current study, SETI researchers might also target atmospheric technosignatures, which are substances manufactured artificially, either as an unintended consequence of modern civilisation or for a particular goal, such as climate management.

Nitrogen dioxide is an example of an atmospheric technosignature (NO2).

The study states that "the generation of NO2 on Earth now comprises biogenic and anthropogenic sources, in addition to lightning." "However, human-generated NO2 outnumbers non-human sources by three times. Detecting significant amounts of NO2 above those observed in non-technological emissions on Earth might be an indication that the planet is home to active industrial activities. "
