LIVE: China Escalates the South China Sea Row, Attacks Philippine Vessel | Vantage with Palki Sharma

The Chinese Coast Guard launched an unprecedented attack on a Philippine naval vessel on Monday. Chinese sailors were seen threatening officials from the Philippines Navy with an axe, injuring eight officers. This incident took place in the disputed South China Sea's Second Thomas Shoal. Beijing claims this region as part of its land; however, Manila has controlled it for decades. While China has previously attacked Philippine ships, this is the most brutal escalation of the conflict yet. Beijing has defended its act, stating that "the Philippines insisted on trespassing on Ren'ai Reef (Second Thomas Shoal) in China's Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands). This is the direct cause of the incident." In response, the Philippine President has issued a warning. He has said that any loss of life of a Filipino would be considered an "act of war".
