One of the BIGGEST POLLINATOR MAGNETS in my garden this year was SCABIOSA or PIN CUSHION FLOWER

👉Tell me - what's your favorite pollinator plant/plants this year? I am doubling down on flowers next year and would love suggestions!

💠So last year in Spring, I scavenged a few seed heads from plants growing by the roadside, and sprinkled them here and there in my garden. They grew quickly and produced large numbers of blossoms, and these adorable seed heads which give them their name, pin cushion flower!
🐝And, boy, did the bees come in their hordes!! Hummingbirds LOVE them too.

🖐️Here are 5 THINGS TO KNOW about SCABIOSA:

1️⃣The word scabiosa comes from the Latin word scabere, which means "to scratch". In the olden days, people believed that scabiosa could relieve the itch of scabies, and other skin rashes.

2️⃣It comes in shades of pink, purple, maroon, and blue, and flowers like crazy - one of the earliest flowers to bloom in my garden.

3️⃣While not necessarily native to California where I live, it is not invasive and grows really well in warmer climates.

4️⃣It is a perennial (Zones 5-9) and I cut it back in late summer this year, and it has grown back and is producing another set of blooms in Fall!

5️⃣Deadhead you MUST, or it will quickly stop blooming to focus on those ginormous seed heads, which are really pretty and interesting looking as well!

👉Grow a ton of flowers, it's the best thing I did for my garden this year. DO YOU AGREE?! Or do you think they take up too much gardening real estate (as my sweet husband often reminds me, lol!)
