The O’Neill Cold Water Classic (ASP 6-Star Event) brought unexpected drama and epic surf to Tairāwhiti Gisborne, with a venue shift from The Pines (Wainui Beach) to Pipe at Midway Beach — and the results were spectacular.

🎥 After battling two and a half days of gnarly onshore winds, the call was made to move the contest into town — and it paid off. Midway Beach delivered solid 1.5m+ surf, with clean conditions and peeling lefts and rights up and down the beach. International surfers were buzzing to jump in, making the most of the improved swell and calm winds.

🌬️ Earlier in the day, heats at Wainui’s Pines started off promising with offshore breezes before quickly turning onshore, transforming the lineup into a washing machine. Despite the tricky conditions, Australian Tom Whitaker powered through his heat with an 11.50 point total, advancing to the next round.

🗣️ “The conditions weren’t the best out there, pretty challenging really, but I got a couple of good ones and I’m through to tomorrow’s action. I just hope it cleans up a bit,” said Whitaker post-heat.
