Speaking at Wired 2012, US artist Alexa Meade urged people to challenge the perceptions they have about themselves, and always consider the possibility that there is another, better path somewhere ahead -- if you're confident enough to colour outside the lines.

"Maybe it's because our perceptions of the world are aligned in certain lines -- we still hold them close," she said. "It's easier to follow a rope through the woods than snip it and find another way."

Alexa Meade, who has developed a technique for painting directly on live models in 3D space to make them look like 2D paintings, began her career as a politics student. However one day, pondering the depth and colour of grass, she decided to find out what would happen if she highlighted the shadows, painting them black -- or, as she put it "bring materiality to absence of light". Then, what would happen if she painted the light on the blades. It turned out the answer was something quite beautiful, which drew the grass out of itself and into its environment to create something new and different. Meade was hooked.
