A construction site celebration Monday in New York City marked the completion of the foundation of what will be the world's largest residential building.

The Trump World Tower will dwarf the Secretariat tower of the United Nations which is just a few blocks down the street.

Some residents of the neighbouring condominium towers have complained that the new Trump building will ruin their views of the city.

Construction sites in Manhattan are not infrequent.

But the Trump World Tower, the foundation of which was completed in New York Monday, will become the world's largest residential building.

Due to be completed in 2001, the tower will house New York's wealthiest in 372 luxury apartments totalling almost a million square feet.

The new building will rise just across the street from the United Nations and will overlook the U-N's permanent gardens.

But while the views from the Trump World Tower will never be spoiled, this is not the case for the building's irate neighbours.

Many in the neighbourhood have complained.

Donald Trump says he's non-plussed by the complaints, citing public opinion polls from the neighborhood that show strong support for his latest real estate venture.

"For the most part, the community is in favour of it. It's going to be the tallest residential tower in the world, and so maybe some of them don't like the height, but for the most part the community is very much in favour of it."

But for those whose own views of the city will be blocked by the new building, Trump has an answer.

He suggests they move into his building to get an even better view.

"The people that are opposed are very rich people who will be losing some of their view. And in some cases I say hey, why don't you buy a better apartment."

The architect of the building is Costas Kondylis, and construction of the building is being managed by Lehrer McGovern Bovis.

The building will have 70 floors and reach a height of 861 feet.
