Nov. 03, 2024 - #31st_Sunday_in_Ordinary Time.
Readings: Deuteronomy 6: 2-6; Psalm 18: 2-3, 3-4, 47, 51;
Hebrews 7: 23-28; Mark 12: 28-34.

The readings for the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B, remind us of #God’s_love_and our call to love him and others. The Word of God challenges us to reflect on the essence of our relationships—with God and with one another—and compels us to examine the sincerity and depth of our love.
In today’s first reading from Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the people of Israel of the centrality of loving God with all their heart, soul, and strength. This commandment is not simply about feelings but a call to an all-encompassing love that governs every aspect of life. It emphasizes the covenantal relationship between God and His people, rooted in love and fidelity.
The Psalm echoes the theme of God's steadfast love. It reminds us that God is our rock, fortress, and deliverer. The Psalmist expresses a deep trust and love for God, who is always there to save and protect. In response to God's love, we are called to live lives of gratitude and faithfulness, recognizing God as our strength.
The second reading, The Letter to the Hebrews speaks of Jesus Christ as our eternal High Priest, who intercedes for us before the Father. Jesus, who offered himself as a perfect sacrifice for our sins, bridges the gap between humanity and divinity, showing us the depth of God's love for each one of us. Through His sacrifice, we are invited into a deeper relationship with God based on love and mercy.
In today’s Gospel according to Mark, a scribe approaches Jesus and asks Him about the greatest commandment. Jesus responds by quoting from the Shema, affirming the importance of loving God above all else. He then adds the second greatest commandment - to love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus emphasizes that these two commandments are inseparable, as loving our neighbours is a tangible expression of our love for God.
