Things are starting to heat up in the tropics, with WRAL meteorologists tracking the first tropical storm of the season. Tropical Storm Alberto formed Monday 295 miles southeast of Brownsville, Texas, becoming the first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the Texas coast from Port O'Connor south to the mouth of the Rio Grande.

Another system east of the Bahamas has a 20% chance of development in the next seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center. The system is moving west, so it could bring moisture to the southeastern United States with the potential for some much-needed rain in North Carolina's southern counties by Friday and Saturday, Wilmoth said. Impacts would not be severe.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs each year from June 1 to Nov. 30. The most active time is usually September through November, but it's possible to see a hurricane make landfall any time of the year.
