We've all faced conflicts and misunderstanding.

Have you ever been an argument where you just go back and forthexplaining yourselves and never got anywhere?

Too often we find ourselves doing more talking than listening. Today's video in share with you 5 steps in becoming an active listener.

1. Pay Attention
Give this person your undivided attention.
That means eye contact, body language, and your presence.
Be solely focused on what this person has to say.
Don't mentally prepare to rebuttal.
Listen to their body language.
Are their arms crossed? Are they looking down a lot?
A lot of what's being said isn't always through words, so pay attention.
Give them direct eye contact.
Where the focus goes, energy flows.

2. Be Involved.
Use your own body language to show that you're engaged in what is happening.
Nod occasionally.
Make sure your posture is open and inviting.
Crossed arms normally means you're closed off.
Encourage the other person to continue with "uh huh" or other verbal comments like "yes" or "gotcha."

3. Provide Feedback

Our personal beliefs can filter and distort what we hear.
TO improve our skill as listeners, it's our responsibility to understand what's being said
.Here's how you can do that.

Reflect on what's been said by saying "what i'm hearing you say is..." or "sounds like you're saying..."

Ask questions to clarify points such as "what do you mean when you say..." or "is this what you mean"

Summarize what that person is saying from time to time.
If you find yourself responding more emotionally to what someone said, say so, and
and then elaborate.

"I may not be understanding you correctly,

and I find myself taking what you said personally.

What I thought you just said is XXX; is that what you meant?"

4. Don't Judge
Interrupting is THE hugest waste of time.
It frustrates the speaker and limits full understanding of the message.
Allow the person to finish each point before asking questions
and don't interrupt with counter arguments.

5. Repsond Appropriately

Attacking the other person or putting them down does nothing for anyone.
You are gaining information and a perspective.
Be open and honest in your response and give your opinions respectfully.
