September is National Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and I had a great conversation last week with Greenwich’s Dita Bhargava about her advocacy for overdose reduction policies and better mental health support for those affected by addiction. After working in finance as a trader and portfolio manager for 20 years and running for statewide office, Dita switched gears in 2018 with the passing of her eldest son, Alec, from fentanyl poisoning.

She has worked on substance use disorder and mental health policy in both Connecticut and Washington, D.C., with V.P. Harris’s office, SAMHSA (Subtance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), and ONDCP (Office of National Drug Control Policy).

Dita is on the Advisory Board for Shatterproof, an organization whose mission is to increase access to recovery, prevention, and mental health resources for everyone who needs them, as well as a Board Member with Liberation Programs, which provides prevention, treatment, and recovery services to individuals and their families in Ct impacted by substance abuse and mental health conditions. Dita is also in her second year of an Executive Master’s in Public Health at Yale University.
