In August, 2023, the Fred Rogers Institute announced that Pat Rumbaugh was chosen as one of the 2023 winners of this award.

Note - the award submissions time limit for this video was three minutes, so I did not get to share the story I witnessed at the 2010 Play Day, with volleyball player Adriana Kocornik-Mina. Adriana, a mom in the Takoma Park community at that time, played volleyball for the Mexican national volleyball team - when she was a teenager. When she offered to teach volleyball at the Play Day event, Pat Rumbaugh said, "Sure."

I was there to witness when two first grade boys walked up to the volleyball net and asked Adriana to coach them on volleyball. I would not expect first graders to be able to learn volleyball skills, but before my eyes Adriana coached them, and the boys loved it. I looked on in awe. I was witnessing the impossible -- as possible -- before my eyes. Even though the boys were not able to hit the ball completely over the volleyball net, they loved getting very close to accomplishing that goal. They experienced triumph in the attempt -- with the encouragement and support of Adriana.
