A few words about the artist to prep you for her masterclass:
Regina Pessoa is a Portuguese artist born in Coimbra in 1969. She discovered her love of drawing when she was little and subsequently went on to study painting at the School of Fine Arts – University of Porto. She expressed her personal, distinct, and creative artistic vision in her films but also through illustration, painting and drawing. In 1999, she directed her first film The Night, taking inspiration from her childhood.

Working with a variety of animated graving techniques, she went on to direct several animation films including, Tragic Story with Happy Ending in 2005, which won the Cristal for a Short Film at the Annecy Festival, the TPS Cinéculte Award for a Short Film, and the Special International Jury Prize at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival. In 2012, Kali the Little Vampire and Uncle Thomas – Accounting for the Days in 2019, which won the Jury Award and Best Original Music Award sponsored by the SACEM in the short film category at the 2019 Annecy Festival.

Widely recognised for her work, her films are screened worldwide, including at the Rijeka Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Musée de l'Orangerie and the Asturias Museum of Fine Arts. In 2016, she became a senior lecturer at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Germany and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood in 2018. She is currently working on her latest film Les Visages de Maman at Ciclope Filmes, the Museum House of Vilar – The Moving Image studio.
