After Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico in September of 2017, 100% of Puerto Rico was left without power, and many without water. Puerto Rico's Commission for the Prevention of Suicide reported that 253 Puerto Ricans committed suicide in 2017, a 16% increase from the year before. Leaders in Mariana are transitioning from emergency response to long-term strategic initiatives to help the community grow and be better prepared for future catastrophic storms.
