After thirty years of letting old VHS tapes of the Mariachi Uclatlán gather dust in the basement, I’ve decided to begin converting some of the material to mp4 files, which can be posted to Facebook and sent to former members of the group and friends. The recordings were made by a German engineer and his Mexican wife, who became regular customers at El Mariachi Restaurant in Orange, CA in 1989. Between 1981 and 1993 the Mariachi Uclatlán played at El Mariachi Restaurant five nights a week. The atmosphere at restaurant was more informal tan at the other Southern California establishments that featured mariachi music several nights a week, because we generally played mostly repertoire requested by our patrons. As I singer, I loved the classic rancheras of José Alfredo Jiménez. My favorite ranchera has always been "Ella."
