My Friend the Rainbow Circle, episode 38: I explore the opening lines of various novels and short stories I pulled off my shelf of favorites semi-randomly and discuss what makes these powerful opening lines. I specifically discuss elision (leaving gaps that beckon readers to fill in missing info) and Parataxis (juxtaposition which invites the reader to resolve the irrational disparity). Books I discuss include The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (of course) + a few other Kafka favorites (A Hunger Artist, The Bucket Rider, A Country Doctor).
