When using an IEEE 802.11™ (Wi-Fi®) enabled device, such as your mobile phone, it can use GPS outdoors because it has a clear line of sight to satellites. But indoors—with a roof overhead, surrounding walls, and other obstacles—GPS signals are blocked. Furthermore, many applications simply require proximity detection with another device in order to provide a suitable user experience, for example, unlocking a door knob, or transfer media to a nearby friend’s device.

While a mapping or proximity application can take you to a location with great precision outdoors, the technology for location or proximity accuracy indoors is not nearly as precise—but this is rapidly changing as device manufacturers begin to innovate new use cases leveraging IEEE 802.11az™, and soon IEEE 802.11bk™.

With most of the world’s mobile data being increasingly carried on Wi-Fi devices, market demand and new technologies are driving innovation of IEEE 802.11. The IEEE 802.11az/bk standard, commonly referred to as next-generation positioning with extensions for Wi-Fi 7, is the evolutionary roadmap of accurate IEEE 802.11 location.
