Donald Trump survived an attempted assassination during a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.
Trump was speaking to the crowd about migration when shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop. Trump turned his head at the last moment before shots rang out, almost certainly saving his life as a bullet grazed his right ear. He ducked under a volley of bullets and was surrounded by secret service agents and armed officers. Questions have been asked about security at the rally, after it emerged people in the crowd had seen Crooks getting into position on the roof. Trump supporters could be seen pointing Crooks out to officers, while others could be heard saying ‘he’s got a gun’. Despite that, security did not pull Trump off stage and Crooks was able to fire two volleys of bullets before counter-snipers took him down. Secret services agents can be heard saying ’shooter down’ before Trump gets back to his feet. Trump had blood running from his ear and across his face as he paused to pump his fist, shouting ‘fight’ as the crowd chanted ‘USA’. He was then taken to his motorcade and driven away from the rally and to hospital for treatment. Much remains unknown about the shooter, who was a registered Republican but had made a $15 donation to a Democrat campaign group. He worked in a nursing home kitchen having declined a place at the university of Pennsylvania, and was known as a quiet kid who had little or no online presence. Trump reappeared just a day after he was shot, landing on his private jet at Newark airport. A day after that, he appeared on stage at the Republican National Convention with a bandaged ear to accept his party’s nomination as presidential candidate. Trump was surrounded by security at the event, raising a fist to the crowd in echoes of the shooting aftermath, and receiving a huge cheer.
