When someone mentions the name "Perry Mason" the first image that runs through their mind is of a lawyer who unmasks murderers and crooks in the courtroom. Even though the television Perry Mason is the one everyone remembers, the original Perry Mason, whose derivation came from radio, is a lot different.
 
The roll of Perry Mason shifted over the long run starting with Bartlett Robinson and then followed by Santos Ortega, Donald Briggs, and finally John Larkin who played the famous attorney after 1947. Broadcast weekdays on CBS Radio from 1943 to 1955, the series was adapted into The Edge of Night which ran on television for an additional 30 years.

The Perry Mason of radio would rather swap gunshots with evildoers than sit in a boring courtroom, waiting for the deliberation! Geared more towards action than courtroom drama, Perry Mason ran 12 seasons and later led to the development of the now-popular Raymond Burr television show, which started in the late 1950s.


As with any series that ran so long (12 years) and produced material 5 days a week, it was inevitable many of the shows would be lost. Only about 400 shows remain (to the public at least). Don’t be alarmed that your really getting into a story and then episodes jump 2 or 3 hundred and Perry is in a new case. I did a lot of searching before posting what I was able to get.
