The wonderful, sublime dancer Arina Trostyanetskaya touched each and everyone in the audience at FBTB 2023 performing to the 1920s song “Dark was the night”.

Arina Trostyanetskaya has been situated in Copenhagen for many years and does most of her work in Sweden and Denmark. She has performed with the world’s leading contemporary dance companies like Netherlands Dance Theatre and Danish Dance Theatre, and worked together with eg. Sweden’s great choreographers Alexander Ekman, Örjan Andersson, and Åsa Unander-Scharin. Arina combines her career as a performer with choreographing and traveling around as a guest teacher for Scandinavia’s leading Dance Companies and professional educations.

Arina about the performance:
In this solo, I worked with the lyrics that are not sung in this recording but historically belong to the song, and speak of the last days of Jesus. I took symbolic images from the Bible: the cross, the Holy Ghost, the cup of Christ’s destiny, the birth and the christening in the river, the crown of thorns, and the silhouette of my costume reminds of The Tower Of Babylon.
In this solo I am an oracle that warns humanity of its destiny, through biblical tales, in truth, I find myself telling it over and over again, and giving up, hoping that they will listen, but humans are deaf to the warnings and lessons of history, and seem to repeat the same mistakes, continue wars and inequality, hate and draining of resources.
I heard a lot of sorrow in this song, dull pain and hopelessness, and amplified those emotions through movement. However, as a human being and an artist, I still carry hope for better times for humanity.
