Tramps and Hawkers
(Traditional, arrang. Jesse Ferguson, 2023)

V1.
D A D G A D
Come all ye tramps and hawker lads who hear the highway's call,
D G D Bm
that tramp this country round and round, come listen one and all.
D G D Bm
I'll tell to you a rovin' tale and sights that I have seen
D A D G A D
far up into the snowy north and south by Gretna Green.

V2.
I've seen the high Ben Nevis a-towerin' to the moon.
I've been by Crieff and Callander an' round by Bonnie Doon
and by the Nethy's silv'ry tides and places ill to go
far up into the snowy North lies Urquhart's glen, I know.

V3.
Ofttimes I've laughed unto myself when I'm trudging on the road
with a bag of corn upon my back, my face as brown as a toad
with lumps of cakes and tattie scones and salted ham and cheese
not thinking where I'm coming from nor where this pathway leads.

V4.
I'm happy in the summertime beneath the bright blue sky,
not thinkin' in the mornin' at night where I will lie.
Barns or bires or anywhere or out among the hay,
and if the weather does permit I'm happy every day.

V5.
Loch Katrine and Loch Lomond have both been seen by me,
the Dee, the Don, the Devron that hurries into the sea,
Dunrobin Castle, by the way, I nearly had forgot,
and then the cairns that mark, me lads, the House of John o' Groat.

V6.
I'm up and round by Galloway or down about Stranraer.
My business leads me anywhere, sure I travel near and far.
I've got a rovin' notion, that speeds me on my way,
and all my day's my daily fare. I have no rent to pay.

V7.
I think I'll go to Paddy's land, I'm makin' up my mind,
for Scotland's greatly altered now; the coin I cannot find.
But I will trust in Providence, if Providence prove true,
and I will sing of Erin's Isle when I come back to you.
