In this video I deconstruct how I created a goddess inspired fashion editorial image using two cloud backgrounds. These backgrounds, from Denny Manufacturing, were a great way to create the surreal environment for my model. Using angelic styling and dramatic lighting, I was able to create a scene that looked as if my subject were an angel descending from the heavens.

I used 4 lights (explained in detail in the video), each with a specific job. An overhead light for the scene and the dress, an octabox for her face, a fill light for detail in the dress, and a grid (top left of frame) to create “god light”.

I was running a haze machine in the room to give a more painterly look to the shot and to help give a glow from the ‘god light’. Because of this, the shot was very flat (haze decreases contrast). In Adobe Camera Raw I increased the contrast, used dehaze, added magenta to the tint. In Photoshop I extended the background (on either side) and composited in a different piece of the dress.

This image was actually created during one of my premium format workshops here in NYC where attendees can join in on the action for a 2 days of learning and shooting!
