About This Session

Welcome to the full, unedited painting session for "The Winding Path 8x10." This is the complete, real-time journey, showing the hundreds of decisions, struggles, and discoveries that happen from the first mark on the canvas to the final brushstroke. In this session, we work through a challenging 8x10 horizontal composition, compositing a road into a landscape and finding our way through the complexities of sky, atmosphere, and color.

This is a look at the real process, not a polished demonstration. I also discuss a big change for the channel: the decision to retire the palette camera, and why I'm focusing all my energy on the most important thing—the painting itself.

My approach to the initial drawing and composition, making key changes from the reference to build a stronger painting; the real-time development of a sky, using the principles of progression and modulation to create atmospheric depth; my problem-solving process for color mixing when a color isn't working; how I handle distant hills and foreground grasses to create a unified sense of light and space; the final stages of adding tree highlights for dimension; and my closing thoughts on why loose, expressive brushwork is more valuable now than ever.
