Topic Description
In this chapter, pupils will learn to find the volumes of cubes and cuboids and solve problems involving volume of solids and liquids.

Learning Targets
• I can find the volume of solids in cubic meters and customary units.
• I can find the volume of cubes and cuboids using formula.
• I can find the relationship between cubic centimeters and liters.
• I can solve word problems involving cubes, cuboids and liquids

Learning Tools
• Unit cubes
• Rectangular prisms
• A range of solid Figures
• Virtual manipulatives and tools (matholia.com).

Suggested Teaching Sequence
1. Build non-cuboid objects from centimeter cubes and count the number of cubes needed for building.
2. Build cuboids from centimeter cubes and count the cubes as a way to determine area.
3. Discuss faster, more efficient ways to count the cubes needed to build a cuboid. Emphasize the idea of multiplying to find the number of cubes in the first layer, then multiplying that number by the number of layers.
4. Guide practice with the formula for volume of a cuboid.
5. Extend the finding of volume to liquid volume with estimating and measuring activities involving water.
6. Guide practice with converting units in volume problems.

Teacher to observe that pupils are able to build the given rectangular prism and are able to count the number of unit cubes that make up the rectangular prism.

Teacher to observe that pupils are able to deduce that the volume of the rectangular prism can be obtained by applying the formula, length x breadth x height.

CCSS.4.MD.A.3
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
