Completing our 12 Biocomposter Project | DITO’S GARDEN Mauritius | Video 3

After three years of work that began in 2022, our 12 biocomposters are finally built and full. In this video I share where the idea came from, how the design evolved on site at DITO’S GARDEN, and why this system fits our tropical context. You will see the finished setup and hear what we learned along the way.

Specs
........
• Dimensions per unit: height 150 cm, diameter 100 cm, central air tube 25 cm
• Working volume per unit: about 1,000 litres when filled to the rim
• Typical harvest window: 3 to 6 months
• Yield: roughly 300 litres of finished compost from one full load

Our compost “lasagna”
..............................
• Browns: mostly dry mango leaves from DITO’S GARDEN, plus shredded paper in bulk and torn cardboard
• Greens: tree prunings on site and acacia from the neighborhood
• Additions per layer set: 1 bin greens, 4 bins browns, 0.5 wheelbarrow cow manure, 1 bag horse manure with woodchips
• Method: layer the set repeatedly, load the unit, water as needed, no turning required

Design evolution

• Early inspiration: ROC community farm in Ville Noire, Mahébourg, run by Ecosud
• Upgrade: guidance from Ravi at Farmbasket after meeting at a Food Heros meetup at Just Natural Farm, Bois Rouge
• Structural changes: raised bases and airflow channels, then geotextile moved inside the cylinder and the bin set on a square of bricks to stop dog damage and keep the system aerobic
