While your first thought may be of someone working in the automotive industry, there are actually many types of mechanics and technicians that specialize in particular fields, including diesel, collision repair, motorcycle and marine.

For most people, the distinction between a technician and a mechanic lies with the type of work being done. Mechanics often do general hands-on work, whereas technicians perform electrical diagnoses and utilize scan tools.
