The Russian T-80UM1 Bars (Snow Leopard) main battle tank was revealed in 1997. It was an improved version of the T-80U MBT, fitted with Arena active protection system. This system was designed to provide protection against incoming anti-tank guided missiles and anti-tank rockets. At the time of its introduction the T-80UM1 Bars was one of the most capable and well protected Russian tanks. However it was never adopted by the Russian army. The tank was offered for export customers, but also received no production orders. Only a single prototype was ever built. It is no longer offered as currently more modern Russian tanks are available. Also the T-80 series tanks proved to be extremely expensive and troublesome to maintain to the their gas turbine engines. Due to expensive maintenance the Russian Army planned to retire all of its T-80 series tanks by 2015. However eventually decision was made to operate the T-80 series tanks. Furthermore some the older Russian Army's T-80BV tanks were upgraded to the new T-80BVM standard in order to extend their service lives and improve capabilities.
The T-80UM1 Bars had a composite front armor with built-in explosive reactive armor blocks. Protection was enhanced by the Arena active protection system. There was also a Shtora-1 countermeasures system.

The T-80UM1 Bars was armed with a 125 mm smoothbore gun, completed with a carousel-type autoloader. The tank could launch 9M119M (Western reporting name AT-11 or Sniper-B) anti-tank guided missiles in the same manner, as ordinary munitions. The 9M119M missile has a range of up to 5 km. It extends the reach of the tank, as the 125 mm smoothbore gun is not particularly accurate at longer ranges. Tank's autoloader provides a maximum rate of fire of up to 7-9 rounds per minute. It stores 28 ready-to-use rounds, while remaining rounds were stored at the front of the hull.
Secondary armament includes a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun mount, located on top of the commander's hatch.

The T-80UM1 main battle tank had a crew of three, including commander, driver and gunner.
