Premortal life, also known as preexistence, beforelife, or premortal existence, refers to the belief that each individual human soul existed before mortal conception and, at some point before birth, enters or is placed into the physical body1. Let’s delve into what we know about premortal life:

Eternal Beings: Before our physical bodies were created, we existed as “intelligence”, which had no beginning and will have no end. Each of us is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents with a divine nature and destiny.

Lessons and Agency: In our premortal life, we were taught lessons that prepared us to assist Heavenly Father in bringing about the salvation of His children. We also had the agency to follow and obey God. Some individuals distinguished themselves through their exceeding faith and good works and were foreordained (given assignments) to serve in specific ways on earth.

Jesus Christ: The greatest spirit who followed Heavenly Father in the premortal realm was Jesus Christ (known as Jehovah there). In our premortal state, we were all present when God the Father explained His plan for the salvation of His children. We learned that a Savior would be needed to overcome the challenges of mortal life. Jesus Christ willingly accepted this role, saying, “Here am I, send me” (Abraham 3:27).

War in Heaven: Lucifer (who later became Satan) rebelled and offered an alternative proposal that would have destroyed human agency. Heavenly Father chose Jesus Christ as the Savior, and a war in heaven ensued. A third of God’s children followed Satan, while the rest rejoiced because they could come to earth and Jesus Christ was chosen to overcome sin and death.

In summary, premortal life refers to the life we lived before coming to earth as mortal beings. It shapes our understanding of our eternal nature and purpose
