On Monday June 23rd, Portugal announced its plan to change the residency requirement for citizenship for foreigners from 5 years to 10 years.

Like I mentioned, we still have to wait for this bill to pass into law. We also need clarification from the government on how this might impact Golden Visa applicants.

However, I think it's clear that Portugal wants to reduce the number of people fast-tracking citizenship without real intention of integrating there.

If you're just looking to get Portuguese citizenship for tax purposes to to get an EU passport, this could be bad news. However, if you plan on living and retiring in Portugal, waiting 10 years versus 5 for your citizenship might not matter as much for you.

Like I mentioned in my last video, it really does seem like the world is changing. Sentiments regarding immigration are changing. This is why I encourage people to look into paths like citizenship by descent or other residency options now before things potentially become more challenging.
