Mohammad Reza soon faced an even harder challenge, with a person who would perhaps ultimately become more significant to his life than anyone before or after: in 1962 the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini sent a letter to the Shah airing his grievance on a new law that allowed non-Muslim local elected officials to take the oath of office on holy books other than the Koran and asking it be struck down. Mohammad Reza wrote back to Khomeini denying his request and tauntingly referring to him as “Hojat-al Islam,” a rank below Ayatollah. Further pressure from the Clergy forced the Shah to reluctantly nullify the law, at least for the moment. But this was only the first public row between the Ayatollah and Muhammad Reza Pahlavi Shah, a feud that only ended with the deposition of the latter 16 years later.
