Chinese sea monsters? What are they exactly?
They are actually ground-effect vehicles (GEV). Soviets had the infamous "Caspian sea monster" large-size GEV, will China produce their own sea monsters?
Development project in China started in 1990s, the goal is to create military and commercial ground-effect vehicle platforms.
The Chinese Albatross 3 is one of the first successful one. And it achieved first flight fairly smoothly.
A ground-effect vehicle moves over the surface by gaining support from the reactions of the air against the surface of the earth or water. Typically, it is designed to glide over a level surface (usually over the sea) much faster than ships.
But it does suffer from the issue that waves might impact the support it can gain This is a major disadvantage of ground-effect vehicles. And it is too risky to fly it above land, because it would be too close to obstacles.
Early Chinese models couldn't break through, but smaller commercial models gain some market share.
They can land on the water surface at any time, reducing flight risk in some cases.
The lift-to-drag ratio of ground effect makes it more economical, construction costs are low in general. Chinese model price is usually half of the aircraft with similar load capacity.
And of course it does not need airport and runway which can be very expensive to build.
And Chinese military use it to patrol northern border. It can fly a squad effectively across land and river.
The speed of ground effect vehicle can reach 120 ~ 550 kilometers per hour. It also can be more stable than ships, and cabin noise levels are easier to manage.
One benefit is, it can fly over sand barge and sea ice that ships will have trouble to overcome.
