You need to define your safety terms in your safety programs! There is importance of safety definitions in safety programs!

We need to address why safety definitions in safety programs are important! After all you want people to read your safety program and understand the contents, don't you? Things like risk, hazard, and controls might be common place to you but possibly not to your readers. Or other technical terms like tripping hazard or attending person.
There are quite a few reasons why ensuring there are clear definitions for the many terms you will use within your safety program or health and safety management system. In this segment of Safety Programs Explained I will provide a quick overview of why you need to ensure you include definitions within your safety program and include some pitfalls you may run into if you don't.

There are many good reasons to have definitions I only included 4. If any of you can think of others please leave a comment. Some additional points:

Keep your more technical terms out of the general definitions and place them where there are needed. For example, attending worker might be defined within the confined space entry section of your program and not within the general portion of the program.

Use common definitions within legislation wherever possible and edit to meet corporate needs.

Look to other reputable sources for acceptable definitions when legislation or OHS publications don't have any.

*Tripping Hazard Definition*

Hazard caused by an abrupt change in vertical elevation or horizontal separation on any walking surface along the normal path of travel.
A trip hazard must meet either of the following criteria:
a 3/4 inch or greater vertical difference on a walking surface, OR
a 2-inch horizontal separation perpendicular to the path of travel

I added - Any temporary object that is placed across or within a path of normal pedestrian travel
