Tinned fished chutney, or tinfish as we refer to it is almost a staple in Durban Indian homes. A quick and inexpensive option, it often serves as a midweek filler meal. Also a firm favourite of students or bachelors and is often one of the first recipes learnt! Because we've been eating it all our lives, it is also often strongly tied to nostalgia and memories of childhoods and growing up.

Ingredients
1 400g tinned pilchards
1 small onion grated
6 cloves of garlic
2 small tomatoes grated
2 green chillies (add more to taste)
1 tbs mixed masala
1/2 tsp hurdee powder
1/2 tsp garam masala powder
1/2 tsp dhania powder
1/4 tsp whole jeera (optional)
1/4 tsp mustard seeds (optional)
1/4 cup of oil

1/2 tsp salt (to taste)
Squeeze of lemon juice to taste
