Over the past 15 years, we have installed hundreds of Barn Owl boxes in the Los Angeles area and actively manage many of them. This project was started because the barn owl population has been decimated by rat poison - a barn owls main source of food. And along with that - in an urban area Barn owls can also have a difficult time finding a safe cavity to raise their young. Before we install a box we inform and educate about keeping these beautiful creatures safe. Many people will then through social media or community meetings pass on that information to their neighbors, so they too can be stewards of the precious barn owl. We keep track of the parents and how many chicks they produce each season. We do this by carefully inserting a camera only long enough to see who’s inside as well as count the eggs and/or chicks. No barn owls are hurt while checking boxes.

Rat poisons kill or severely injure more than just Barn Owls and their babies - the rats usually don't die right away which is why they become easy prey and poison for pets, raptors and mammals. It can be a slow and painful death. https://www.nps.gov/samo/learn/manage...
