21.2 Naming Complex Ions and Coordination Compounds | General Chemistry

Описание к видео 21.2 Naming Complex Ions and Coordination Compounds | General Chemistry

Chad provides a thorough lesson on how to name complex ions and coordination compounds. It is explained that though the metal is listed before the ligands in the formula of a complex ion, the ligands are named before the metal and in alphabetical order. Latin numerical prefixes (di-, tri-, tetra-, penta-, hexa-) are used to identify when more than one of the same ligand is present in a complex ion. Once all ligands have been named the metal is named. For anions the metal is named with an -ate ending, and for several the Latin name for the metal is used (Fe, Cu, Ag, Au, Pb, Sn). Following the metal its oxidation number is placed in parenthesis with Roman numerals. Finally, entire coordination compounds that contain complex ions are named with similarities to how other ionic compounds are named. Finally, the lesson is concluded with how to identify the formula of complex ions and coordination compounds from the name.
